Halloween is coming up quickly and spooky fun awaits! But with all the unfamiliar sights, sounds, and treats, Halloween can be stressful for our feline friends. Here are some simple tips to ensure your cats stay safe and calm.
1) Safe Haven: Keep your cats indoors during the Halloween season. With the increased foot traffic, noise, and firecrackers outside, your kitty could get scared and run off or get hurt. On Halloween night, consider keeping your cat secured in a quiet room where they feel safe, complete with their favourite toys, a cozy bed, food, water, litter, and perhaps some catnip and treats to keep in the Halloween spirit!
2) ID and microchips: With doors opening frequently for trick-or-treaters, there’s a higher risk of your cat escaping. Make sure your cat is wearing a breakaway collar with an updated ID tag and consider getting them microchipped. Don’t forget to register the microchip with your contact info!
3) No candy for cats: Chocolate and artificial sweeteners like xylitol are toxic to cats. Keep your candy hoard safely away from your cats reach and contact your vet right away if you suspect they have ingested anything toxic.
4) Keep an eye on the decorations: Curious kitties may see Halloween decorations as fun new toys. Keep an eye on candles, electric cords, and small decorations that could be ingested or cause harm.
By taking a few precautions, you can make sure that both you and your feline friends have a safe and enjoyable Halloween.
Happy Halloween everyone!
